Checking and Preparing the Base
We check the floor for level, cracks, damp and dust, and repair or clean it so the tiles have a sound surface.

Floors prepared, levelled and tiled flat with even joints
In Brief
Floor tile installation is laying tiles on a prepared, level surface with the right adhesive, even spacing and a clean grouted finish. Most failures, such as lifting, hollow tiles and cracked grout, come from poor preparation, so the work starts with checking and levelling the floor, not with the first tile.
Tiling looks like the easy part of a floor, but the result depends mostly on what is underneath. A floor that is uneven, dusty, damp or cracked will show through in the finished tiles: some lift, some sound hollow, and the lines of the grout wander. Large-format tiles, which are popular for living areas, need an especially flat surface, because they cannot hide small dips.
We check the base, repair and level it where needed, and plan the layout so cuts are balanced at the edges and not squeezed into a narrow strip at one side. Tiles are bedded in adhesive with the right trowel, spaced evenly, checked for level as the work goes on, then grouted and cleaned. The floor is kept clear until the adhesive and grout have cured. Our tiling service covers wall and floor work, and wet rooms need bathroom waterproofing before tiling. For later repairs, see tile replacement and repair.

Uneven floors are levelled where needed, since tiles, especially large ones, will show any dips.
We plan the layout so cut tiles sit sensibly at the edges and joints line up with doors and fixed features.
Tiles are laid in a suitable adhesive with the correct trowel, so they are fully bedded and not hollow.
Spacers and levelling checks are used throughout, not just at the end, so joints and levels stay consistent.
Once the adhesive has set, joints are grouted and the tiles cleaned, and the floor is protected while it cures.
Send photos of the floor and the tiles you have chosen, and say the room size and what is under the tiles now.

Sometimes, if the old tiles are sound, flat and firmly fixed. Often it is better to remove them. We check the floor and tell you which option suits.
The adhesive may not have fully supported them, or the base was uneven or dusty. Hollow tiles tend to crack or lift, and we can repair them. See tile replacement and repair.
