Floor drains do a quiet job: they take away wash-down and spill water so floors stay dry. Because they are in the floor, they collect hair, lint, dirt, sand and debris, and in rarely used rooms the water in the trap can dry out. When that happens, a smell can rise through the drain, and a blocked drain can leave water pooling on the floor.
